4. Resilience, Independence and Retrieval

Even with strong routines and expertly scaffolded knowledge, we know that students need to work hard to be successful. Habits can make hard work much easier. As one of the most influential people in our students’ lives, we can model and embed these habits in our students so that they can become successful life-long learners.

These videos cover a range of techniques aimed at supporting students towards independence in their learning. They also cover how we can support students with retrieval: the practice of recalling knowledge from long-term memory when it is needed. The two are linked – we want students to recognise the value of retrieval, and engage in meaningful practice and revision independently to embed the knowledge we have taught them. The techniques will help you to develop confident, determined students who are prepared to work hard to build their knowledge and be successful.
